What makes an outdoor route difficult?

The short answer

Outdoor route difficulty comes from the combined demand of distance, ascent and descent, gradient, surface, technical features, exposure, navigation, remoteness and weather. The same route can be straightforward for one group on a dry, clear day and serious for another group in wind, darkness, heat, ice or poor visibility. No single distance or ascent figure settles the question.

Begin with measurable facts

Distance and climbing set the workload, not the whole difficulty.

Distance describes how much ground the route covers. Total ascent describes how much height is gained across all climbs. Both influence time and fatigue, but neither reveals where the work occurs. Five hundred metres of ascent spread across a long track feels different from the same height packed into a steep kilometre.

Longer outings increase the effect of pace, stops, food, water and fading daylight.

Descent can be tiring too, particularly on steep, loose or broken ground.

Average figures can hide short ramps that determine whether a section is walkable or rideable.

Estimated time should include the actual party, carried load, expected surface and stops. Mountaineering Scotland notes that walking speed changes with fitness, rucksack weight, journey length, wind, ground and slope angle. A simple timing rule is a starting point, not a promise.

Read the ground

Technical demand and consequences can outweigh the statistics.

  • SurfaceSmooth tracks, deep bog, loose stone, roots, sand, snow and broken rock demand different pace, balance and equipment.
  • MovementHands-on scrambling, precise wheel placement, awkward steps or stream crossings can make a short section decisive.
  • ExposureA simple move becomes more serious where a slip could lead to a long fall, fast water or another severe consequence.
  • NavigationA clear path in a valley asks less of the navigator than a featureless plateau, complex forest or unmarked open hillside.
  • CommitmentRemote ground, few escape routes and a long return make mistakes harder to correct.

A GPX line cannot describe every obstacle. Contours help reveal slope and landform, while a current route description can identify smaller features that fall between contour lines.

The route is not static

Weather changes progress, navigation and consequences.

Wind can make an exposed ridge difficult to stand on. Low cloud removes visual references. Heavy rain can turn firm ground into mud and raise watercourses. Heat increases water demand, while snow and ice can require specialist skills and equipment. The Met Office advises choosing a day and route that suit the party's skills and checking mountain-specific forecasts where relevant.

Recent conditions matter as well as the forecast. Rain overnight, freeze and thaw, forestry work, erosion or a damaged bridge can change the route before the first step or pedal stroke.

The human factor

The relevant difficulty is the demand on the least prepared person.

Experience, current fitness, injury, confidence, footwear or bike, navigation skill and tolerance for exposure all affect the decision. A technically capable person can still be slowed by fatigue. A fit person may have little experience on loose descents or in poor visibility.

Groups also move more slowly than their fastest member. Build the plan around the person with the narrowest margin, then keep enough time and energy for an unplanned stop or retreat.

    Use distance, ascent, steepest sections, surface, exposure and navigation rather than a broad adjective.

    Apply the forecast and current ground report.

    Allow for visibility, wind, temperature, rain, snow, daylight and known closures.

    Compare those demands with the whole group.

    Check skills, equipment, realistic pace and the ability to manage the hardest section.

  4. Exit

    Choose decision points and alternatives.

    Know where the route can be shortened, left for lower ground or turned around before the commitment increases.

A useful difficulty label starts a conversation. It should never replace the route assessment.
