Closed shape, ordered file
A circle on the map still begins with one stored point.
A circular route returns to its starting area, so it can look as though any point is interchangeable. The file says otherwise. GPX route points and track points are ordered, and one point appears first. That order also gives the loop a direction.
Navigation can use the first point to establish departure, calculate remaining distance and decide which part should come next. Starting halfway round without changing the file may initially look like a deviation. If the same area occurs again near the finish, progress can also jump to the wrong occurrence.
Some apps explicitly support joining a route away from its stored start. Others expect the file to begin where the outing begins. Check the current product behaviour instead of assuming that a closed shape removes the distinction.
The real departure
Choose a place that works before it becomes a coordinate.
A practical start is reachable by the intended transport, has lawful access at the relevant time and allows the group to assemble without blocking a gate, road or path. Current signs and temporary restrictions matter more than an old pin.
The shape of the day matters too. Beginning near a useful exit can make an early problem easier to manage. Starting immediately before the hardest climb may suit one plan and undermine another. On a ride, joining a fast road at an awkward point can be worse than starting a few hundred metres away.

Move the sequence, not the purpose
A new start should rotate the loop without scrambling it.
To prepare a new file, identify the point on the original line closest to the chosen departure. The points after it become the beginning; the earlier points move to the end. The loop direction remains unchanged.
This is different from trimming. Trimming can remove part of the loop and leave a gap between finish and start. It is also different from reversing, which changes every approach and departure. If the route has an overlapping lead-in, decide whether that shared leg belongs before the circuit, after it or both.
A good loop edit changes where the sequence begins, not which journey the sequence describes.
Before departure
Review the seam where the end now meets the beginning.

Confirm the marker and route begin together.
The first visible movement should leave the chosen start in the intended direction.
- Trace
Follow the entire loop in order.
Pay special attention to crossings, shared paths and the old start, where progress could attach to another occurrence.
- Measure
Compare summary figures with the original.
A rotated closed route should remain broadly the same journey. A material change suggests missing or duplicated geometry.
- Test
Check the actual navigation handoff.
Open the route on the device to be used and verify that it recognises the new beginning before going offline.
