Can you follow a GPX route backwards?

The short answer

Yes. A GPX route or track is an ordered line, so beacen can follow its points from the final point back to the first. Reversing changes navigation direction, not the source file. The route still needs a fresh check because access rules, gradients, transport, daylight and directional notes may not work the same way backwards.

The operation

The ordered points are read from the other end.

GPX routes and tracks contain points in sequence. Reversal changes that sequence for navigation. The old finish becomes the new start, and every subsequent point is approached from the opposite direction.

In beacen, choose Forward or Reverse before starting navigation. The imported source file remains unchanged. You can return to the forward direction later without rebuilding or renaming the GPX.

This is different from asking a road-routing service to calculate a new journey. A plain track can be read backwards as the same geographic trace. A routable course may be recalculated against a map and its restrictions, so other services can produce a changed line or refuse the reversal.

Every climb becomes a descent and every descent becomes a climb. Technical difficulty and pace can change significantly.

Overall ascent and descent also trade places only when the same complete elevation profile is preserved. Missing elevations, corrected terrain data or a newly calculated route can change the displayed totals.

Before treating it as equivalent

Access and logistics may be one-way even when the line is not.

  • RestrictionsOne-way roads, managed trails, timed access, seasonal controls and direction-specific permissions can make reversal inappropriate or unlawful.
  • Route notesNames, comments and waypoints stored in the file do not rewrite themselves. Instructions such as “turn left after the gate” may be wrong backwards.
  • HazardsA scramble, steep descent or exposed crossing can demand different skills and judgement from the opposite approach.
  • TransportParking, public transport, opening hours and collection arrangements now belong at the other end.
  • TimingMoving the hardest ground later in the day can change daylight, weather and turnaround decisions.

Reversal is a navigation setting, not proof that the route is operationally symmetric.

    Confirm the new arrival point.

    Check lawful access, transport and the exact place where navigation will begin.

  2. Trace

    Read the whole line backwards.

    Check junction approaches, river crossings, steep ground and any separate track segments.

  3. Verify

    Replace directional assumptions.

    Confirm current restrictions and rewrite any personal notes that only make sense forwards.

  4. Prepare

    Check offline use again.

    Open the reversed route and surrounding map before leaving coverage. Allow for a different pace profile.
