How contour spacing reveals slope

The short answer

Contour spacing shows how quickly height changes across horizontal ground. Closely packed lines mean a steeper slope; wider gaps mean a gentler one. The pattern describes the fall line, not automatically the gradient of a path. A route crossing contours obliquely can climb more gently, and the map's contour interval and scale must be checked before comparing slopes.

Height over ground

The same vertical interval across less ground means a steeper slope.

Neighbouring contours are separated by a fixed height difference for that map. Where the lines sit close together, the land must gain or lose that height over a short horizontal distance. Where they spread apart, the same height change takes more ground and the slope is gentler.

The contour interval is essential. Two gaps that look identical on different maps can represent different vertical changes. Scale matters too because it determines the ground distance represented by the apparent gap. Check both in the legend before comparing one hillside with another.

The broad landform is gentle, though rough surfaces or small banks can still make travel difficult.

The line you take

Contour spacing describes the hillside, not automatically the path.

The most direct line uphill tends to cross contours near a right angle. It gains each contour interval over the shortest local distance, so it follows the steepest direction of that surface. A traversing path meets the same contours at a shallower angle and spreads the climb across more distance.

This is why two routes on one hillside can feel very different. A zigzag may cross many tight contours but do so gradually. A shortcut aimed straight uphill may cover less distance while using a much steeper gradient. The route's own geometry must be measured, not inferred from the underlying contour gap alone.

Read the sequence

A slope can steepen, ease and steepen again.

Do not judge an entire climb from its tightest pair of lines. Follow the spacing from bottom to top. If gaps progressively narrow uphill, the upper part gains height more sharply than the lower part. If they open uphill, the climb eases towards the top. Alternating bands reveal benches, ramps or breaks of slope.

  • Very tight linesLook for cliff, crag or earthwork symbols and route notes before assuming the ground is a continuous walkable slope.
  • A sudden wide bandThis may describe a terrace, broad shelf or valley floor between steeper sections.
  • Irregular gapsThe landform changes along the fall line, so average gradient conceals the sequence.
  • No visible contourThe area may be flatter than one interval, or the display may have omitted detail at that zoom.

From impression to estimate

Count vertical change, then measure the route distance that earns it.

  1. Interval

    Read the contour interval from the map.

    Do not borrow the interval from another series or assume every visible line represents the same increment.

  2. Crossings

    Trace the route and count genuine height crossings.

    A switchback may meet one contour several times. Direction tells you whether each section climbs, descends or returns to the same height.

  3. Distance

    Measure along the route, not straight across the page.

    Gradient relates vertical change to the horizontal run travelled through that section.

  4. Ground

    Check what contours cannot resolve.

    Steps, cuttings, walls, surface, exposure and erosion can matter more than the broad slope.
