Orient the pattern
First establish which side is higher.
A bent contour does not identify a valley or ridge on shape alone. Find labelled contours or spot heights, then follow the values uphill and downhill. Closed contours with values rising towards the centre normally describe a hill. Values falling inward may describe a depression, which some maps mark with additional symbols.
Now add drainage. Water tends to gather in low ground, so streams and wet features help identify valley axes. High ground tends to divide drainage, so the land between neighbouring valleys may form a spur or ridge. Relief shading can help the pattern read quickly, but contour values remain the stronger evidence.
Low ground gathers
A valley cuts back into higher land.
Where contours cross a narrow valley, they commonly form a V whose point aims towards higher ground. The arms open downstream towards lower ground. Several nested bends show the valley continuing across successive heights, often with a stream running near its centre.
The V rule is a prompt, not a complete diagnosis. A broad glacial valley may produce a rounded U pattern. A shallow dry valley may carry no mapped water. A river can meander across a wide valley floor without following the centre of every contour bend. Trace the landform through several lines rather than naming one isolated corner.

High ground projects
A spur points downhill between valleys.
A spur is a tongue of higher ground extending out from a hillside or ridge. Its contour bends normally point towards lower ground, the opposite direction from the valley shapes beside it. Travelling along a spur can involve climbing or descending even though the route follows high ground relative to each side.
A ridge is more extensive. It forms a line or belt of high ground, often separating drainage on opposite sides. The crest need not have one constant height and may include tops, dips and rocky steps. Follow the highest part through the contour pattern rather than expecting a single drawn line to label the crest precisely.
Valleys collect the low lines through a landscape. Ridges organise the high lines between them.
The lower way through
A saddle sits between higher ground and above lower ground.
Between two summits, contours can pinch into opposing curves. The centre is lower than the tops on either side but higher than valleys falling away in the other directions. In British hill language this crossing may be called a col, pass or saddle, though local names do not always follow one technical convention.
These gaps often attract paths because they can avoid climbing over a summit. That does not make every saddle easy or sheltered. Tight contours may guard either approach, while peat, rock, snow, wind or a missing path can change the decision. Route difficulty still depends on the complete ground and conditions.

Make height, water and neighbouring forms agree.

Follow values through several contours.
Establish where the land rises and falls before applying any remembered shape rule.
- Water
Find drainage and catchment direction.
Streams support a valley reading, while divides between streams support a ridge reading.
- Context
Inspect the complete landform.
Look for adjacent valleys, summits, saddles, rock symbols and shaded relief that confirm or challenge the first interpretation.

Practise on a wide view before zooming into the route corridor. Height labels, drainage and neighbouring forms must agree before a bend can be read confidently as a ridge or valley.
