Rough and soft ground absorb effort in different ways.
On a firm, smooth surface, a walker, runner or bicycle can maintain a regular movement pattern. Soft ground deforms under load and can require more work for each step or wheel turn. Rough ground interrupts that pattern. Feet must be placed, wheels must be guided and the body absorbs repeated changes in height and direction.
For cycling, roughness adds vibration and can require a slower line even when traction is good. Loose material can move under braking or climbing force. For runners and walkers, stones, roots and uneven grass shorten stride and demand balance. None of these effects has one fixed size. Equipment, technique, gradient and the exact material all change the result.
Continuity matters as much as category. A short patch of loose stone may have little effect on a long route. Repeated rough sections can prevent a rhythm from returning. A route description should therefore say how much of the surface occurs and whether it forms a sustained sector.
Control before pace
Low grip changes what can be accelerated, turned and stopped.
Speed is constrained not only by effort but by the ability to control it. Wet rock, polished roots, mud, loose gravel and leaf cover can reduce available grip. On a climb, that may cause wheelspin or an uncertain foot placement. On a descent, it can lengthen braking decisions and reduce cornering speed.
Gradient magnifies the consequence. The same wet slab can be unremarkable on level ground and decisive on a steep line. Camber and exposure matter too. A slippery surface beside a soft verge is not equivalent to the same surface beside a drop or wall.
Soft ground and deep material move under the user instead of providing a firm platform.
Braking, cornering, climbing and foot placement become more conservative.
Ruts, holes and loose edges can leave only a small usable part of the track.
A surface is a condition
Material names do not describe moisture, depth or maintenance.
Gravel may mean tightly compacted aggregate, newly laid deep stone or a track whose fine material has washed away. Grass may be firm after a dry period or saturated and rutted after rain. Soil varies by place and drainage. Surface labels remain useful, but only when accompanied by condition and date.
Water can also hide the structure beneath it. A shallow-looking puddle may cover a hole or loose stones. Freeze and thaw can break sealed roads, while forestry and farm traffic can change an unsealed track quickly. Check current reports where available and approach unseen ground at a speed that leaves room to respond.
From label to decision
Describe the sustained effect, roughest section and likely interruption.
A useful route note names the material, condition, gradient and continuity. “Five kilometres of firm forest road” gives a planner more than “off road”. “Two short rocky descents with drainage steps” identifies a handling demand that a gravel percentage would hide.

Describe what the surface is.
Use plain terms such as sealed road, compacted track, loose stone, mud, grass, rock or sand.
- Place
Say where and for how long.
Locate the rough sector and state whether it is continuous or broken into short pieces.
- Qualify
Add gradient and condition.
Explain whether the section climbs, descends, holds water or changes strongly after rain.
- Conclude
State the practical effect.
Identify likely slower travel, careful control, dismounting or equipment considerations without promising an outcome.
This structure works across activities because it preserves the evidence. It does not claim that every user will lose the same time. It lets each person connect the surface to their own experience, including the rapidly changing pace considered in GPX navigation for trail running.
