What low power mode changes during GPS navigation

The short answer

Low power mode does not have one universal effect on GPS navigation. It can reduce background work, network activity, sensor sampling or display behaviour, and watch platforms may alter location updates. Some Android navigation apps can still receive foreground location in Battery Saver. Treat power saving as a configuration to test, not a guarantee that navigation will fail or continue.

Different systems, different trade-offs

Low power mode does not simply turn GPS off.

Power-saving modes reduce demand by changing a collection of features. The list can include background work, network use, display behaviour, refresh frequency and sensor sampling. The operating system, device, app state and any workout-specific setting all matter.

This makes two absolute claims unreliable: that navigation always stops in a low-power mode, or that it always continues unchanged. A route can remain visible because it is stored locally while the position updates differently. A navigation app can keep location access while its live search or synchronisation is restricted.

iPhone and Android

Phone power controls affect background activity in different ways.

Apple documents that iPhone Low Power Mode reduces background activity and turns off features including Background App Refresh and automatic downloads. Apple does not describe that mode as a universal GPS-off switch. Whether a particular navigation session continues after locking the screen still depends on the app, its permissions and system handling.

Android 12 and later allows foreground location, including a correctly implemented foreground location service, to continue during Battery Saver even with the screen off. That platform capability does not prove that every app uses it. Android devices can also include manufacturer-specific battery controls, so behaviour observed on one handset should not be applied to all others.

Smaller battery, explicit compromises

Watch settings can change both connection and sampling.

Apple Watch Low Power Mode turns off or changes several features. When the iPhone is not nearby, Wi-Fi and mobile data remain off until an app needs a connection. Apple also provides a separate Fewer GPS and Heart Rate Readings workout setting on supported watches. During qualifying outdoor workouts, that option reduces the frequency of those readings and removes some workout features.

Google warns that power-saving mode can interfere with Maps on Wear OS. The effect of a watch manufacturer's own saving mode, or a third-party route app, must be checked on that watch. Do not assume that the name of the mode describes every restriction.

There is also a practical display trade-off. Keeping a map awake and bright consumes power, but relying on a blank or sleeping display can make checks slower. Choose a screen behaviour you can operate deliberately rather than chasing one universal battery setting.

Measure behaviour, not hope

Rehearse the route with the intended power mode active.

  1. Charge

    Start from a known battery level.

    Record the device, software version and power mode so the result has context.

  2. Run

    Use a short familiar route.

    Lock the screen, switch apps and use the watch exactly as planned.

  3. Inspect

    Check position, route and recording separately.

    Look for stale location, missing guidance, a track gap or only a display change.

  4. Compare

    Repeat under normal power.

    Change one setting, then compare the same short route rather than several variables at once.
