Rehearse the real setup
Test the connection you expect to lose and the device you expect to use.
An offline test is useful only when it resembles the intended setup. A phone with mobile data disabled is one case. A watch separated from its phone is another. A watch with LTE but no downloaded route is different again. Write down what will be present on the trip before deciding what to disconnect.
Run the check in a familiar outdoor place with a clear route back and no time pressure. Finish all downloads first. Use a short test route that passes at least one junction and extends far enough to make the position marker move. The aim is to inspect the system, not to test your memory.
- Phone-only setupRemove mobile data and Wi-Fi, then use the phone normally.
- Watch plus phoneKeep the intended Bluetooth relationship and remove only the network connection.
- Watch without phoneLeave the phone behind or fully break the pairing range during the controlled check.
A short field procedure
Open, disconnect, reopen, then move.
- Open
Inspect the saved route while connected.
Confirm its name, start, direction, full geometry and the map area around it.
- Cut
Remove the connection deliberately.
Turn off mobile data and Wi-Fi for a phone test. For a phone-free watch test, also establish that the phone is no longer supplying data.
- Reopen
Prove that the data is local.
Close the route view, return to the app and find the route from its saved collection. Pan to each edge of the prepared map.
- Move
Check live position and guidance.
Walk or ride the short test route. Confirm that the marker updates and that the app behaves as expected at the junction.
- Restore
Reconnect and review.
Restore normal settings, note anything that failed and repeat after correcting it.
Pass or fail
A visible route line is not the whole result.
Check route, map, position and guidance separately. Zoom in enough to see path detail. Pan beyond the route to make sure the useful surrounding area is present. Watch the location marker for movement rather than accepting a last known position. If the app provides an off-route or progress feature, test it only in a controlled place where leaving the test line is harmless.
The full line appears without retrieving it again from a message, browser or cloud list.
The planned corridor and its practical margins are readable at navigation scale.
The device is obtaining a live location rather than showing only its previous fix.
The phone or watch used in the field has the data and controls it needs.
What the rehearsal proves
A passed test confirms one configuration at one moment.
It does not prove future battery life, satellite visibility, map freshness, device temperature or route conditions. Software updates and changed permissions can alter the result. Repeat the check after a significant app or operating-system change, after replacing a device, or whenever the route transfer process has changed.
Check the actual trip route too. A test area downloaded near home says nothing about the map area elsewhere. For the complete preparation list, see what to download before going offline.

Official platform and mapping guidance confirms that offline data must be downloaded in advance. A rehearsal checks only the route, map and device setup tested at that moment; it cannot certify future battery life, coverage or device behaviour.
