North-up vs heading-up maps

The short answer

North-up keeps geographic north at the top of the screen, so the map stays in a fixed orientation. Heading-up rotates the map so the device's reported heading points towards the top. North-up helps preserve wider spatial context; heading-up can make the next movement easier to relate to the screen. Neither mode improves the underlying position fix.

The map frame

The route stays put while the screen chooses a frame of reference.

North-up fixes geographic north at the top of the display. Walk east and your position moves towards the right; travel south and it moves down. The labels, contours and route line keep the same compass relationship while you move.

Heading-up rotates the map so the direction reported by the device points towards the top. The position marker can remain near one part of the screen while the map turns beneath it. This often makes left and right on the display correspond more closely with left and right in front of you.

That rotation changes presentation only. It does not rotate the landscape, alter the GPX or make a weak location estimate more accurate. A user can make the same correct decision in either view once the orientation is understood.

Heading-up

Use the top of the screen as a current direction, not a permanent north.

Heading-up is useful when the immediate question is physical: which fork lies ahead, or which side should the route leave from? The route section in front of the marker is framed towards the top, reducing the mental rotation needed to compare screen and ground.

The view depends on a direction signal. A stationary device may use a compass heading; a moving device may also have a course derived from successive positions. Metal, magnets, a loose grip and slow movement can all make the displayed direction hesitate or swing. The exact signal and filtering depend on the device and app.

North-up

Keep the landscape stable when the wider pattern matters.

North-up makes repeated checks easier to compare because a ridge, valley or road remains on the same side of the display. It suits route overview, checking the direction of a long leg and relating a digital map to a north-oriented paper map.

The price is mental rotation. If you face west, the movement ahead appears towards the left of the screen. Look at the heading or recent track, establish which way you face, then translate the next route movement into the ground. A compass-aware marker can help without rotating the entire map.

North-up preserves the atlas. Heading-up preserves the immediate direction of travel.

At the decision point

Choose the orientation that answers the question in front of you.

  1. Frame

    Start with the wider relationship.

    Use north-up to identify the approach, the next route section and any large terrain feature that should be visible.

  2. Align

    Switch when left and right need to be immediate.

    Heading-up can make a complex fork easier to relate to your body, provided its direction has settled.

  3. Verify

    Compare more than the arrow.

    Use the route before and after the junction, contours, path shape, signs and visible ground. Orientation should clarify those clues, not replace them.

  4. Reset

    Return to the view you can read consistently.

    There is no prize for leaving a rotating mode enabled. A stable north-up map is better than a heading-up map you are still decoding.
