What recenter does during navigation

The short answer

Recenter normally returns the map camera to the app's following view after you have panned, rotated, tilted or zoomed away. Depending on the app, that view may centre your location, restore a preferred zoom, rotate to a heading, or frame the route ahead. Recenter changes the camera state. It does not obtain a better GPS fix or move the route.

Two different states

The map camera can move without your location moving at all.

A navigation map combines data with a view of that data. Your estimated position, the saved route and the base map belong to the first group. Centre, zoom, bearing and tilt belong to the camera that frames them.

Dragging the map usually moves the camera away from a following state so you can inspect another place. Pinching changes scale. Rotating changes the screen bearing. None of those gestures edits the route or tells the location system that you have moved.

This distinction explains the recenter control. It is not a command to find a new location from scratch. It is a way back from manual exploration to a camera state associated with the navigation session.

Return to following

Recenter asks the camera to frame the journey again.

The simplest recenter action places the current position back in view and resumes following as new positions arrive. A navigation app can do more. It may offset the marker to leave space for the route ahead, restore a heading-up bearing, apply a preferred pitch or choose a zoom that includes the next manoeuvre.

Some interfaces cycle through states. One press may centre without rotating; another may follow the heading. Others have separate overview and following controls. The icon cannot guarantee the exact transition across every app, so notice what happens to the compass, scale and amount of route shown.

The important limit

A tidy frame does not repair uncertain location data.

If the position marker is drifting, recenter can place that drifting marker neatly in the middle. If the heading is wrong, a following camera can rotate around the wrong direction. If the route file is misplaced, recenter does not align it to the map.

Read location uncertainty and camera state separately. A marker can be centred with a broad accuracy circle, or off-centre with an excellent fix because you deliberately panned away. The first is a data-quality question; the second is only a view choice.

Recenter answers “where is the active view?” It does not answer “how certain is this position?”

A practical rhythm

Explore first, then return to a known navigation frame.

Think of the camera as moving through three states. Deliberate panning enters inspection. Recenter returns to following. A final verification establishes whether the resulting frame and the underlying position both make sense.
