Rerouting vs rejoining a saved route

The short answer

Rerouting calculates new route geometry from the current position towards a destination or later point. Rejoining keeps the saved route as the plan and asks you to return to it. The first can change where you travel; the second preserves route identity but does not guarantee that the return is suitable. Confirm which behaviour the app offers before moving.

After a deviation

One option changes the plan; the other returns to it.

Going off a saved route creates a gap between current position and planned geometry. Rerouting and rejoining answer that gap differently.

Rerouting asks a routing system to calculate new geometry from where you are. It may lead directly to the final destination, to a later waypoint or back towards the original route, depending on the product and request. Once accepted, that calculated line becomes some or all of the active plan.

Rejoining leaves the saved route unchanged. You decide how to return to an appropriate point on it, using the surrounding map, access information and ground. The return path may be obvious, or it may be the hardest part of the decision.

A new calculation

A reroute can preserve the destination while replacing the intended journey.

A routing engine works from a network, a travel profile and a set of objectives. Its new line may be perfectly valid for those inputs yet ignore why the original route was saved. A scenic ridge, particular trail, technical section or planned resupply point can disappear if it is not represented as a required destination.

Rerouting can also need current network data or a route graph stored offline. It is therefore different from merely displaying a downloaded GPX. An app that can show the old route without signal may not be able to calculate a new one.

The saved route remains authoritative

Rejoining protects route identity, not the suitability of the return.

The original GPX remains intact, including its direction, later decisions and intended finish. That matters when the route itself is the reason for the outing rather than a disposable way to reach a destination.

However, a straight line to the nearest route point is only a geometric relationship. It may cross a river, steep ground, private land, a fence or an inaccessible level of a junction. Even a visible map path can have restrictions or changed conditions. The correct rejoin point may be behind you, ahead on a known connection or at the last confirmed junction.

Rejoin means return to the plan. It does not mean take the shortest line back to it.

Make the response explicit

Confirm what the interface will do before following its next line.

  1. Stop

    Establish the current position and last confirmed point.

    Do not let an automatic-looking prompt turn uncertainty into immediate movement.

  2. Name

    Identify reroute, bearing or route display.

    A straight connector, a compass direction and a calculated path represent different levels of knowledge.

  3. Compare

    Inspect what would be abandoned.

    If accepting a reroute, check the destination, later route sections and any required waypoint before replacing the plan.

  4. Verify

    Check the return or new path against the ground.

    Use current signs, access, terrain and a wider map. If those do not support the line, do not treat the calculation as permission.
