What to do when you go off a GPX route

The short answer

When you realise you have left the route, stop somewhere safe and confirm that the alert is not a short GPS wobble. Read the full map and the ground around you, then choose a sensible way back using the saved line, direct rejoin guidance and breadcrumbs. beacen does not calculate a road-style reroute. Terrain, weather and closures still govern the decision.

Read the signal

A warning is not proof of a wrong turn.

Position readings move as conditions change. Trees, steep ground, buildings and the way a device is carried can reduce accuracy for a short time. A warning tells you to look closely. It does not settle the question on its own.

Make the decision

Stop before choosing how to return.

  1. Settle

    Wait for a stable position.

    Remain somewhere safe and allow the location reading to settle. Recenter the map if needed.

  2. Read

    Use more than the route line.

    Compare the full map with paths, slopes, walls, water, junctions and other features you can identify around you.

  3. Trace

    Review where you travelled.

    Use breadcrumbs and the last known point on the route to understand where the divergence began.

  4. Choose

    Rejoin or turn back deliberately.

    Select the option that fits the actual ground, remaining daylight, weather, battery and your confidence.

The line back

Direct rejoin is guidance, not a new route.

beacen can show the relationship between your current position and the saved route. It does not inspect every fence, river, cliff, private boundary or temporary closure between those points.

A visually short return can be the wrong return. Follow a known path or retrace a safe section when that is more sensible than crossing unknown ground.

The fastest-looking line is not automatically the safest line.

Know the limit

A navigation app is not an emergency plan.
