Before the ride
Find where road, track and trail change the decision.
A gravel GPX often joins surfaces that use different mapping, signs and access arrangements. Review every major transition. Confirm where a lane becomes a byway or forest road, where a broad track narrows, and where the route leaves an obvious road at an easily missed opening.
Check the route direction and look for intersections where several tracks leave at similar angles. Surface clues can help on the day, but they can also tempt the rider onto the wrong line when the intended route is less prominent. Route order and the wider map remain important.
Add dated notes for known gates, carries, seasonal mud, closures or access-sensitive sections. The GPX itself may contain only coordinates. Keeping the notes available offline preserves information that the line cannot express.
The line needs surroundings
Use a wide view for access, escape and parallel tracks.
Download the map around the route, not a narrow corridor that ends at the GPX. Mixed-surface rides can reach places where the planned track is flooded, closed or unexpectedly rough. A wider view helps identify the surrounding road network and understand where a deliberate alternative might lead.
Do not treat every mapped line as a permitted or rideable connection. In England and Wales, cycling access differs between public rights of way, and Scotland uses a different responsible-access framework. Local signs and restrictions still matter. A shortcut drawn across a screen needs the same access and suitability checks as the original route.

Navigation at riding speed
Set up simple cues and preserve the larger map for stops.
Use a securely mounted display, watch or audio cues in a way that keeps the moving interaction brief. Set the useful map scale before departure and make sure gloves, rain and screen lock will not make basic controls inaccessible. The route should remain available without mobile data.
Battery planning should match elapsed time rather than an optimistic moving time. A bright screen, cold conditions and repeated map inspection can increase power use. If the phone also provides communication and the only wide map, avoid spending all its charge on continuous display. When the route no longer fits
Stop before turning a surface problem into an access problem.
If the track is closed, flooded or unsuitable, move to a clear place and inspect the wider map. Check current signs and identify the last confirmed permitted junction. Do not cut across a field, woodland or footpath merely because it creates the shortest return to the acid line.
