How to judge gravel route difficulty

The short answer

Gravel difficulty comes from the surface mix, how long rough sections continue, climb steepness, loose or muddy ground, technical descents, gates, remoteness and the suitability of the bike. Total distance matters, but the hardest kilometre can determine tyres, gearing and required handling skill. UK gravel labels are informal, so read the route description rather than assuming a standard grade.

More than a gravel percentage

Gravel is a broad recreational label in the UK. It may describe smooth estate roads, compacted forest tracks, broken byways, moorland doubletrack or short sections that feel closer to mountain biking. A route's surface mix is therefore more useful than its category name.

Split the route into road, firm track, loose track and technically uncertain sections. Continuity matters. Twenty kilometres of steady hardpack creates a different demand from twenty short off-road fragments separated by gates, junctions and road crossings. Look for route notes that describe seasonal mud, deep stone, sand, ruts or a grass centre that narrows the rideable line.

Check access separately from physical rideability. A line on a digital map does not establish a right to cycle, and the rules differ across UK nations. Current signs, closures and responsible access take precedence over a downloaded route.

The sections that set the level

The roughest kilometre may choose the bike for the whole day.

Find the steepest off-road climbs and descents rather than reading total ascent alone. A hard surface can make a steep climb manageable with suitable gearing. Loose stone, wet grass or a rutted line can remove traction and turn the same gradient into a push. On descents, surface movement, braking room and line choice determine more than the average slope.

Suitability is relational

Judge the route for this rider, bike and load.

Tyre volume and tread, gearing, brakes, riding position and luggage all change how a mixed-surface route feels. That does not produce one perfect specification. A confident rider on a lightly loaded bike may handle a rough track comfortably, while another rider or a heavily laden setup needs more margin.

Ask whether the gearing suits the steepest sustained climb when traction is limited, not only whether it suits the total ascent. Consider whether tyres provide appropriate grip and resilience for the roughest surface. Make sure any bags remain secure on repeated vibration and leave the controls free. The correct question is not whether a gravel bike can complete the line in theory. It is whether this complete setup can be controlled and repaired on the actual route.

Conditions and comparison

Use comparable rides, then update the judgement.

Rain can soften tracks, deepen ruts and reduce braking grip. Dry periods can leave loose dust or deep gravel. Forestry work, storm damage and farm activity may alter a route after the GPX was published. Check current land-manager information where it exists and expect the surface report to have a date.

A useful description names the surface, gradients, technical pinch points and likely walking, then leaves the rider to make the final match. Once the route is chosen, prepare its mixed-surface navigation as a separate task.
