Before entering traffic
Know the complex decisions before a cue appears.
Review the course from start to finish. Confirm direction, one-way roads and any place where the line crosses itself. Identify major roundabouts, multi-lane junctions, slip-road crossings and turns that follow a descent. A GPX track can show the intended geometry without containing the road layout or a usable turn instruction. Assess those demands through road cycling route difficulty before setting off.
Current road signs, signals and the Highway Code remain authoritative. If a planned movement is not permitted or does not feel manageable, do not follow it simply to remain on the line. Stop in a suitable place and choose a lawful, understood alternative.
Load the route before departure and check that the start is recognised. Beginning near a later part of a loop can confuse progress. On an out-and-back, make sure the file contains both directions if remaining distance and route sequence matter.
Keep attention on the road
Use the smallest interaction that communicates the next decision.
Audio, a watch or a securely mounted display can reduce the need to handle a phone. Configure it before moving. The useful cue says what happens next with enough notice to observe the junction, take an appropriate road position and signal. It should not encourage a last-second turn.
Do not stare at a countdown while traffic and road surface change around you. A cue is an alert to begin reading the road. If the display needs closer inspection, stop somewhere suitable and clear of the traffic flow. Never hold or operate the phone while riding.
Observe signs, signals, pedestrians, vehicles, surface and available space.
Use the cue to identify the intended road, then confirm it against the junction.
Inspect alternatives and detailed geometry only from a suitable stationary position.
Preserve route identity
Know whether the device is showing the saved course or a new calculation.
A saved GPX is an ordered line. Some applications can also calculate directions along a road network. If the rider misses a turn, the app may preserve the original course, offer a line back to it or replace part of it with a reroute. Those outcomes are not equivalent.
A calculated detour may use a busier road, different surface or junction that was not part of the route assessment. Before accepting it, check where it goes and whether it remains suitable. Rejoining the original course also needs judgement. The shortest connection to the line may not be the best road.
If route identity matters, keep the original visible and note where the new geometry begins and ends. This makes it possible to distinguish an intentional course change from a display that merely appears to remain on plan.
