How to judge hiking route difficulty

The short answer

Judge hiking difficulty by combining distance and ascent with path quality, steep descents, exposure, stream crossings, navigational complexity, remoteness and current conditions. Then compare that demand with the whole group's fitness, movement skills and experience. A familiar ten-kilometre walk on clear paths can be less serious than a shorter pathless route in poor visibility.

The ground underfoot

Start with how the kilometres will actually be walked.

Distance and total ascent are useful, but they describe only the outline of a hike. Ten kilometres on a firm, obvious track is a different proposition from ten kilometres across peat, tussocks, boulders or a faint path. Look for the proportion of the route that is surfaced, rough, pathless or interrupted by stiles and stream crossings.

Read ascent and descent separately. A sustained climb tests pacing and endurance. A steep or broken descent can be slower, place more demand on balance, and remain difficult when tired. An elevation profile shows where height changes, but a topographic map and route description are better for finding crags, narrow ridges, scree, deep valleys and abrupt changes of slope.

Do not confuse a visible path on a map with easy walking. The path may be wet, eroded, indistinct or absent on the ground. Conversely, a well-built upland path can make a substantial climb straightforward to follow. Surface, width and continuity give the distance its meaning.

Where commitment rises

Judge the hardest section and the consequences around it.

A route can be mostly gentle and still contain one section that sets the required skill. Identify any steep steps, hands-on movement, exposed edges, river crossings, pathless slopes or ground where a slip would have serious consequences. A guidebook distinction between walking and scrambling matters. If a route crosses into scrambling, this hiking framework is no longer enough on its own.

Ask where the section occurs. A rough descent near the start is not equivalent to the same ground after hours of walking. A remote col with no easy alternative has more commitment than a short rocky pitch beside a lower path. Map practical escape routes, but do not assume the nearest road or valley is accessible or easier.

Include balance, confidence on steep ground and the ability to descend, not only uphill fitness.

Count pathless legs, broad summits, repeated junctions and terrain that becomes ambiguous in cloud.

Conditions are part of the route

Reassess when weather, daylight or water changes.

Rain can make stone, roots and grass slippery, swell streams and turn soft paths into slow ground. Strong wind matters most on exposed ridges and open plateaux. Low cloud can remove the landmarks that made the planned route easy to follow. Heat, cold and remaining daylight change the margin available for delays.

Use a mountain forecast where the route enters mountain terrain. Valley weather is not a reliable description of a summit. Check current local notices and recent information, but treat any report as a snapshot rather than a guarantee. Winter snow and ice can transform ordinary hillwalking into mountaineering terrain and need separate assessment.

The people walking it

Use the least comfortable requirement, not the strongest person's confidence.

Compare the route with recent, genuinely similar walks by the whole group. Fitness on a smooth path does not prove confidence on exposed or pathless ground. Consider pace, balance, navigation skill, equipment, load and how people usually feel on long descents. Build timing from your own evidence and leave room for stops and route checks.
