Mobile data can disappear while satellite positioning continues.
A phone does not use the mobile network as the source of GPS satellite signals. Losing bars therefore does not, by itself, switch off the location receiver. The device may still estimate its position outdoors, although accuracy depends on sky view, signal blockage, receiver quality and other conditions.
Mobile and Wi-Fi networks can assist location and supply everything the app has not stored. When they vanish, a first fix may take longer and network-fetched information can stop. It is normal for an app to retain one part of its screen while another becomes incomplete.
Satellite-based location can work without mobile service where the receiver has a usable view.
Data already stored on the device does not need to be fetched again.
New map areas, search, live updates, syncing and communications can require a connection.
Diagnose the missing layer
Blank map, absent line and stale position mean different things.
If the route line remains but the surrounding detail disappears, the likely missing item is map data. If the map remains but the route vanishes after reopening, check whether the route was saved locally. If the map and route stay visible but the location marker stops updating, look at Location Services, app permission and the quality of the fix.
A wide accuracy circle or a marker that jumps near cliffs, trees or buildings can reflect degraded satellite geometry or reflected signals. It is not evidence that mobile coverage must be restored. Read more about the physical causes in why GPS position drifts or jumps outdoors.
When the screen changes
Pause the decision, not necessarily the recording.
Move to a suitable place where you can look at the device without creating another problem. Establish whether the planned line, your recent movement and enough surrounding map detail are still visible. Compare the display with paths, signs and terrain rather than following a questionable marker simply because it is moving.

Leave the saved route and offline map in place while you inspect the failure.

Separate data loss from location loss.
Look for the route, map and position independently rather than treating the whole screen as one service.

Use the ground as evidence.
Confirm that the visible path and terrain agree with the prepared route context.

Use a known option.
If you are off the line, follow the deliberate process in what to do when you go off route.
Back online
A restored connection may refill data, but it does not rewrite what happened.
Map tiles, searches and sync operations may resume once the device has a usable connection. Give pending transfers time to complete. Do not assume that a live share, message or cloud sync covered the no-signal period unless the relevant service confirms it.
If a recording contains a gap, preserve the original before editing. A missing section may come from location loss, an interrupted app session or a power control rather than the mobile network itself. The route you intended to follow and the track your device recorded are different records.
Signal loss is not one failure. Check the route, map, position, guidance and communications separately.
